History of Hair Transplant

In the history of medicine, hair restoration is probably the only field that started with the perfect technique (alas forgotten) and went on to create the worst nightmarish outcomes using most unaesthetic methods/techniques.

It is, therefore, important to know the history so that we do not commit the same mistakes again.

The Fraud - It is legally allowed for any physician to claim that they can perform hair transplant…yes, anywhere in the world (USA, Europe, Asia etc) without any training.

The Proof - If comprehensive training in modern hair transplants were available, then you would have gone to the professor of the concerned department of any medical college… and have become a volunteer patient. The Professor would get a willing subject and you would have got your hair transplant for free…but that does not happen.

The first true single hair follicular extraction (fue) hair transplant was carried out and published in a Japanese medical journal by Dr. Okuda in 1939 (Japanese Journal of Dermatology and Urology), what became known as “The Okuda Papers”.

The Okuda Papers: an extraordinary – but unfortunately unrecognized – a piece of work that could have changed the history of hair transplantation.

However, from 1950’s to even present time people saw a variety of so-called “logical” but brutal methods to restore hair.

Some of those outdated methods are still being used, so you need to know the basics about those methods before undergoing a hair transplant surgery.
